LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – an almost new 17″ Crates Trail Saddle – generated quite a bit of action with nine bids and a creative winning bid of $786.51. That’s a very good price for a virtually new Crates trail saddle.

Vintage Simco Trail SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week we sought out a used saddle for sale that would be a worthy “recession” pick – a nice little saddle that won’t break the bank. We found one with another of those vintage Simco Trail saddles.

This week’s pick, is a 15″ Simco Trail Saddle that has seen quite a few miles but still has a lot left in it. It’s a smaller saddle that will fit a short-backed horse and a smaller rider. It’s also going to be easy on the back, as it weighs in at only 22 pounds.

The saddle is fully floral carved with a chocolate brown suede seat. The seller indicates the gullet width is 6 inches, which probably means the tree has Semi QH bars. The saddle has some wear spots, but nothing that affects the structural integrity of the saddle.

As of this writing, there have been 13 bids and a top bid price of $108.26. There are a number of bargain recession shoppers that have there eye ont this one. Maybe you should too.

Crates Reining Saddle

This week we’ve found an almost-new Crates reining saddle that is a real dandy. I’m a big fan of Crates saddles. I own one myself and I think they’re one of the best production saddle brands out there. They make nice, solid saddles.

This week’s saddle has a 16inch suede seat, 6 5/8 gullet (full QH bars), with basket weave tooling on parts of the the fenders, skirts, jockeys, fork and cantle.

Reiners are close contact saddles that have become popular for use as overall training saddles and for trail riding. They’re not suitable, however, as a heavy duty “using” saddle.

In the photo you can see how nicely balanced this saddle is – a level seat with the stirrups hanging straight down. This saddle has so few rides in it that it’s basically a new saddle.

Circle Y is a brand that’s been around awhile. Like so many of the older brands, it’s heyday was 20 or 30 years ago when they were producing the best production saddles in the industry. Today, their saddles are relatively average.

Used Circle Y Show SaddleThis week, however, we’ve found a pretty nice, little, light oil show saddle from Circle Y. You’re not going to be able to steal this saddle, though, as the starting bid is $499 and the “Buy it Now” price set at $600. I’d try to very close to $500 mark. Don’t get caught up and overbid.

The saddle has a 14″ equitation seat, light oil color, black suede seat, floral tooled with silver trim and matching breast collar. There is no mention of the bar type, but it probably has semi-QH bars. Verify with the seller before bidding.

This would be a nice saddle for a youth or small adult who’s interested in the show ring.

I’m a real fan of the Crates brand. They have been making some very solid, quality production saddles for some time now. My group of personal saddles includes a Crates.

Crates Western Pleasure SaddleSo I was happy to find this nice Crates pleasure saddle for this week’s “pick.”

This flashy saddle is definitely in-style with a light oil finish, full basket weave tooling, suede seat, and loads of silver. There’s no mention of what kind of bars it has, but I’d bet they’re Semi-QH. Make sure you verify with the seller before bidding.

Call me old fashion, but I like a western saddle to LOOK like a western saddle. Many of the new western saddle designs sure don’t look western to me. That’s why I love vintage saddles. They always look like western saddles.

Circle Y Youth SaddleCircle Y saddles from 25 or 30 years ago are great vintage saddles to shop for. They were well made with quality materials.

This week we’ve found a very nice 13″ Circle Y youth trail saddle. This saddle is in great shape and has many miles left on it. This would be a so much better choice for a young rider than a brand new, inexpensive saddle.

The saddle has a 6 1/2″ gullet and in-skirt full rigging. The suede seat is a worn but still in good shape. The saddle is dark oil, fully floral tooled with silver lacing on the cantle and fork bindings. This is a handsome saddle.

This week’s pick is a really nice Circle Y All Around saddle made in 1990 – a very good period for Circle Y saddles. The newer Circle Y saddles aren’t of the same quality as the older ones.

circley-all-around.JPGThis saddle hasn’t seen a lot of miles and has been very well cared for.

The saddle has a 16" suede seat, Semi QH bars with a 6 3/4" gullet, basketweave and floral tooling, and a matching breast collar.

The seller is also throwing in a new Weaver leather bridle and bit, and a pair of new, leather-wrapped wooden stirrups.

There’s 6 days left on the auction as of this writing and already 5 bids, but the current bid is only $305. This is a very nice saddle. You might want to consider getting into the bidding action on this one.

There were a number of nice used Crates saddles for sale this week – both reining and roping saddles. But they weren’t priced right, just a bit below the going price for new ones, so you won’t see them featured here. But Crates is a nice brand to look for with used saddles.

simco.JPGInstead, we’re featuring a nice, older 15 inch Simco saddle. The seller is billing it as a "Ladies/Youth Show" saddle, but that’s just a reaction to the smaller footprint that older saddles have. Nowadays we’ve become more accustomed to bigger horses and bigger saddles, but this Simco is typical of a saddle from twenty or thirty years ago. So, I wouldn’t specifically call it a ladies or youth saddle.  It also doesn’t have enough flash to qualify as a show saddle. I’d call it more of a trail saddle.

I had a very similar Simco saddle that was a great extra saddle for guests. Everyone always found it comfortable and it was light and easy to handle.

At $325 this saddle is a decent buy, but I wouldn’t go much higher than that. There are quite of few of these Simco saddles around and they all seem to go for between $300 and $400, depending on their condition.

martin-saddlery.JPGThis week we have a saddle from another great brand – Martin Saddlery. Martin is very popular among the professional and competitive crowd, but they make a great saddle for any rider. The saddle this week is a 16 inch roping saddle with plenty of flash – oak and acorn tooling over the entire saddle with a suede seat and silver-laced cantle binding. The gullet measures 6 3/4" and it’s double rigged.

There’s a lot of bidding action on this saddle – 14 bids with six days still left on the auction but the price is still at only $610 as of this writing. If you’re looking for a quality roping saddle at an  affordable price, you’ll want to check this one out.
