LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Because of our hiatus, we don’t have a “Last Week’s Pick” to report on.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week a Price McLaughlin saddle makes its first appearance as a “Pick,” and it’s about time. Price McLaughlin was a very accomplished saddlemaker from Boyd, Texas. While he made a variety of saddles, he was most known for his reiners. But all of his saddles had one thing in common … high quality craftsmanship … and they’re very much in demand.

This week’s saddle is a Price McLaughlin 15″ – 15.5″ Reiner/Pleasure saddle. The saddle has definitely had some use but it’s been well cared for, still looks great, and has much riding left in it.

The saddle has a bit of flash that you’ll often see on reining saddles with silver corner plates and silver lacicng.

There are no bids as of this writing and the starting bid price is $580. That’s a good price for a Price McLaughlin in this condition.

A Buyer Beware Tip for Used Saddles

October 31, 2011 by

After a very long absence – over a year! – we are oh, so happy to be back. I thought I’d start out with a quick “buyer beware” post of something I just saw on ebay..

Someone is selling a vintage Billy Cook trail saddle with a cracked tree. Now, to give them credit, they are revealing in the listing that the saddle tree is indeed cracked.

But a saddle with a cracked tree is done being a saddle. What it is now is … parts. The seller has it listed for $162, which is a bit rich for “parts,” which makes me a bit nervous that someone might buy it for a riding saddle.

Don’t do it. A cracked tree is a serious defect that will be no good for the horse or the rider. Stay away.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a 15″ Vintage Tex Tan Hereford Pleasure Saddle – generated a lot of action with 37 total bids. These vintage pleasure/trail saddles are really popular, and for good reason. This saddle ended up selling for $312.77, a fair price.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

Cactus Saddlery Barrel Racing SaddleThis week we’ve found a really nice barrel racing saddle from Cactus Saddlery. This saddle is from their signature series – a 14.5″ Charmayne James Barrel Saddle. Charymayne James is a world champion barrel racer.

The saddle is in like-new condition with obviously very few rides on it.  It’s a really attractive saddle -  medium oil with acorn, leaf, and barbwire tooling, rough out jockeys and fenders for grip, and a light pink suede seat to add a bit of pizazz for the competition arena. The seller says the gullet width is 7 inches.

Cactus Saddlery makes a nice saddle and this one is in great condition. This would be a very nice saddle for a youth or small adult for competitive events or a bit of light trail riding.

As of this writing, there are only 2 bids and a high bid of $102.50.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a 15″ Vintage Big Horn Trail Saddle – is still for sale on ebay. Surprising because the starting bid price is $400 with a Make Offer option. You could probably get this saddle for a steal. You just might want to take a look.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

Vintage Tex tan Trail SaddleThis week we’ve gone for another  vintage  saddle – this time it’s a classic Tex Tan Hereford and it’s a special little saddle.

The saddle is a 15″ Tex Tan Hereford Pleasure Saddle with a classic vintage look, dark oil, floral tooling, and some classy silver trim.

The saddle has a wood tree with a 6 inch gullet width and a padded seat. The saddle is in great condition and has obviously been well cared for.

Which makes the fact that the high bid is currently (as of this writing) only $93  downright crazy. This saddle is easily worth $300-$400, so it looks like someone just might get quite a bargain.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

I knew last week’s pick – a really nice 12″ Billy Cook Youth Barrel Trail Saddle – would generate a lot of action … and rightfully so. It started out with a number of low bids but ended up going for $306 after 26 bids. Still a good price for a hard-to-find saddle.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

Vintage Big Horn Trail SaddleThis week we’ve gone back a ways for a vintage Big Horn saddle. I love the old Big Horns – they’re right up there with the old Simcos and Herefords.

This week’s pick is a 15″ Big Horn Trail Saddle with that great vintage style -  darker oil, overall floral tooling, low cantle, square skirts. A true classic.

The seller says the saddle has full QH bars which will fit most stocky quarter horse types. This would be a nice saddle for trail riding as a main or extra saddle.

The seller has the price listed at $400 but is accepting offers. If you’re interested, I’d make a lesser offer and see if you can’t sneak this one out for a deal.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a very solid 15″ Tex Tan Hereford Trail Saddle – ended up being a darn good bargain for some lucky buyer. With 16 bids in, the winning bidder still ended up only paying $285 for this very nice saddle – A bonafide bargain.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week we’ve found a real jewel – a hard-to-find Genuine Billy Cook (Sulphur, OK) youth saddle. This saddle is a 12″ Billy Cook Barrel Saddle and it’s a great little ride. It’s hard to find used youth saddles from a quality brand such as Genuine Billy Cook.

The saddle has basket weave tooling, rough out fenders and jockeys and a suede seat. There’s an amateur repair on one fender but, while ugly (you could have a professional do a better repair), it doesn’t affect the stability of the saddle.

This would be a great saddle for a youth rider, especially one who rides in competitive events.

Like last week’s gem, this saddle is generating quite a few bids at low bid prices. As of this writing, there are 13 bids but a high bid price of only $102.50.  This one could be a real steal.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

It seems to me that saddle sellers and buyers are out of synch of late. I see lots of sellers listing saddles at the upper end of their value and buyers don’t seem to be biting. I think the sellers have to start realizing that it’s a buyers’ market right now and, if they truly want to sell their saddles, they need to get real and start their bidding at lower prices.

Last week’s pick – a nice little 13″ Youth Trail Saddle – hasn’t sold yet and is still listed on eBay. The “Buy It Now Price” is $299, but you can make a lower offer and. if you’re interested in the saddle, I’d recommend you do.

Used Circle Y Park and Trail SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week, we’ve chosen a popular Circle Y model. The saddle is a 17″ Circle Y Park and Trail Saddle. Circle Y has sold a lot of these models and they’ve been very popular, relatively light, general trail saddles.

The Park & Trails have Circle Y’s flex-lite tree, gel-insert seats, and taller, 5 inch cantles, making for a comfortable ride. This saddle is a handsome dark brown with acorn tooling

The seller claims the saddle has only been used 12 times and it certainly looks pretty darn new in the photos. A good opportunity to get a popular like-new saddle for a used saddle price. These saddles sell new for around $1500, so the starting bid price of $750 would be a good deal. There are no bids as of this writing.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a really attractive 15.5″ Billy Royal Show Saddle – ended up not being sold because the bids didn’t meet the seller’s reserve price. I think the seller was holding out for too high a price. The highest bid was $855 and, though the saddle is worth more than that, there is a glut of used saddles on the market and you’re just not going to get top dollar these days. It really is a buyer’s market right now.

Used Youth Trail SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week, we’ve found one of those hard-to-find youth saddles. The saddle is a 13″ Youth Trail Saddle.

There’s no maker’s mark, but it appears to be a solid little saddle. And, what really stands out is that, with a 6″ gullet, it’s not just a pony saddle, but will fit a small horse. That makes it a much more versatile saddle.

The leather’s in good condition and it’s a handsome little saddle. So, if you have a youth rider in the family, this would be a great saddle to have in your barn.

The saddle is listed for a “Buy It Now” price of $299 or Best Offer. That’s a good price for this saddle.
