LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – an almost new 17″ Crates Trail Saddle – generated quite a bit of action with nine bids and a creative winning bid of $786.51. That’s a very good price for a virtually new Crates trail saddle.
This week we sought out a used saddle for sale that would be a worthy “recession” pick – a nice little saddle that won’t break the bank. We found one with another of those vintage Simco Trail saddles.
This week’s pick, is a 15″ Simco Trail Saddle that has seen quite a few miles but still has a lot left in it. It’s a smaller saddle that will fit a short-backed horse and a smaller rider. It’s also going to be easy on the back, as it weighs in at only 22 pounds.
The saddle is fully floral carved with a chocolate brown suede seat. The seller indicates the gullet width is 6 inches, which probably means the tree has Semi QH bars. The saddle has some wear spots, but nothing that affects the structural integrity of the saddle.
As of this writing, there have been 13 bids and a top bid price of $108.26. There are a number of bargain recession shoppers that have there eye ont this one. Maybe you should too.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – an almost new 15″ Saddle King Ranch/Roping Saddle – ended up being a real solid buy for some lucky rider. There were 10 bids, but the winning bid price was only $510, a good deal indeed.
This week we’ve gone back to one of our favorite production saddle brands – Crates. Crates has been making quality saddles in Tennessee for generations.
This week’s pick, a 17″ Crates Trail Saddle, is another one of those great “almost new” used saddles. This one could pass for new.
It’s a medium oil with a suede 17inch seat, and basket weave tooling. The saddle has Semi QH bars and in-skirt rigging that helps make this a lightweight saddle at only 27lbs.
This saddle, with a 17inch seat and Semi QH bars, will require a horse with a longer back (so that the saddle won’t rest on the horse’s loins) and not too broad of shoulders.
If your horse fits this description and you’re looking for a lightweight, comfortable trail saddle, this Crates saddle would be a nice choice.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – a very solid and uncommon 16″ Vintage Crates Trail Saddle – was snapped up for a great price of $380. Deals like this one is why I love the used saddle market. You can certainly find a new saddle with a $380 price tag, but the quality of that saddle will be no where near the quality of this used Crates. And the used Crates has a longer life left in it than the new saddle.
This week we’ve chosen a really nice little Hereford Trail Saddle. Hereford has been a solid brand for decades and continues to be.
This week’s pick is a 14.5″ Hereford trail saddle that would be a great choice for a youth or small adult. Handsome but not overly flashy with a suede seat and tooled skirts. The seller doesn’t mention a gullet width or bar type, so make sure to inquire before bidding. As a smaller saddle, it probably has semi QH bars.
The saddle looks to have been well cared for and should be a good prospect for resale when outgrown. With only one bid and a high bid of only $125 as of this writing, this is a bargain waiting to be discovered.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – a nifty little 13″ Teskey Barrel Saddle – sadly didn’t receive a single bid. The seller put a bit steep starting bid price of $750 that probably scared folks away, but the saddle is worth that price and a bit more. Hopefully the seller will re-list it.
This week’s pick is a handsome vintage Crates Trail Saddle. You don’t see many Crates saddle of this period for sale, so this is a special little gem. I’m a big fan of Crates saddles. They’re well built, balanced, and attractive saddles.
This saddle has the look of Simco saddles of this period with dark oil and full floral tooling. The seller hasn’t listed a gullet width, so you’ll want to inquire before bidding. Saddles of this period are usually semi QH bars.
There is only one bid as of this writing of $314. This would be a nice addition to the barn as it is one of those saddles that most folks will find comfortable.

We’ve found another nice gem for you this week. This is a Trail saddle from Colorado Saddlery, a high quality production saddle maker.
This is a ten year old saddle with floral tooling that’s been well cared for. You’ll have to contact the seller to determine the gullet size, but I suspect it’s a semi-quarter horse tree.
The combination of a good maker and good care make this saddle a great buy. So much better than so many of the low quality new saddles for sale today. The starting bid is only $195.
