LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a really handsome 16.5″ Custom Ben Terrell Buckaroo Saddle – went unsold with not a single bid placed. As I feared, the starting bid of $900, coupled with  a saddlemaker who, while very talented and well known in the saddlemaking world, isn’t as well known among the public, scared folks away. Really too bad because this was a really nice saddle and $900 would have been a steal.

Used Billy Royal Show SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week, we’ve chosen a very nice saddle that is also just downright pretty. The saddle is a 15.5″ Billy Royal Show Saddle. Billy Royal makes nice quality saddles and specializes in the show category.

Since show saddles are usually very well cared for and aren’t ridden for too many miles, they are great candidates to buy used. This saddle is a very good example. As you’ll see in all of the photos the seller provides, the saddle looks almost brand new.

The saddle is in dark oil with a 15.5″ suede seat, full floral tooling, and loads of sparkling silver. The tree has Full QH bars. This saddle will look fabulous in the show ring. The seller bought this saddle in 2003 but no longer shows and hasn’t ridden it in years.

There are 6 bids, as of this writing, with a high bid of $510. The Seller has a “Buy it Now Price” of $2100, which, in my opinion, is too high. You can currently find this model for sale new for $2200-$2700. So a five year old model, even in this great of condition, isn’t worth $2100. I think $1500-$1800 would be a fair price. Anything less would be a very good deal.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s Pick, a very well built 17″ Martin Saddlery Roping Saddle, was another high-action sale. The final tally was 25 bids and a selling price of $1325. The Martin Saddlery brand is known for quality.

circle y show saddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

The show season is around the corner, so this week we’ve found a very solid 16″ Circle Y Show  Saddle. .

This saddle is medium oil with a padded 16 inch seat, floral carving, and nicely turned stirrups. It has a tasteful complement of silver trim on the corners of the skirts, back jockeys, stirrups, and the fork. Some show saddles get a bit carried away with the silver trim, so it’s nice to see a tasteful presentation. The gullet width is approximately 6 1/2 inches.

This is a well-cared for saddle that will get you or your kids in the show ring without breaking the bank. The starting bid of $500 may be scaring folks away as there are no bids as of this writing. This saddle is certainly worth $500 so don’t be scared off.

Used Circle Y Show Saddle

This week we’ve found a handsome dark oil Circle Y Show/Western Pleasure saddle. It’s had some use but has obviously been well cared for and has many miles left in the show ring.

This saddle has a 15 1/2″ suede seat, floral tooling on the fork, skirts, cantle and jockeys and elegant silver trim. The gullet width is approximately 7 inches and the rigging is in-skirt.

A number of folks have an eye on the saddle. Bidding is brisk, but, as of this writing, the saddle is still at a bargain price of $202.50.

Dale Chavez Show Saddle

Dale Chavez Saddles make very high quality production saddles. They specialize in competition saddles that have some flash to them. A brand new one will set you back a pretty penny.

This week we’ve found an almost-new Dale Chavez competition/reining-style saddle that, while not cheap by any measure, could still go for a bargain for a saddle of this caliber.

This saddle is a beauty. It has a 16 inch suede seat, floral and basket weave tooling, and loads of silver. The seller doesn’t list the gullet width or type of bars so you’d want to check on that before bidding.

This is a chance to own a Dale Chavez saddle without paying Dale Chavez prices.

Used Circle Y Show Saddle

Circle Y saddles have been around for some time. Like many of the older saddle brands – the older models were the best. This week we’ve found a dandy older Circle Y for sale.

This is a 15 1/2″ Circle Y Show saddle with silver trim and a very nice equitation seat. Too many newer saddles have seats that tilt you back and force your feet out in front of you. A quality equitation seat will place you in a balanced position with your legs underneath you.

The seller says this saddle has a 6 inch gullet and full QH bars. That’s a bit narrow for full QH bars. I suspect that the bars are probably Semi QH, especially considering the age, as Semi QH bars were the norm.

This saddle has seen some use but still has many miles left to go. It’s well worn in with nicely turned stirrups. A great saddle for all around trail riding and open shows.

As of this writing, there’s already 11 bids, so it’s not going to be a sleeper, but still worth keeping an eye on.

Circle Y is a brand that’s been around awhile. Like so many of the older brands, it’s heyday was 20 or 30 years ago when they were producing the best production saddles in the industry. Today, their saddles are relatively average.

Used Circle Y Show SaddleThis week, however, we’ve found a pretty nice, little, light oil show saddle from Circle Y. You’re not going to be able to steal this saddle, though, as the starting bid is $499 and the “Buy it Now” price set at $600. I’d try to very close to $500 mark. Don’t get caught up and overbid.

The saddle has a 14″ equitation seat, light oil color, black suede seat, floral tooled with silver trim and matching breast collar. There is no mention of the bar type, but it probably has semi-QH bars. Verify with the seller before bidding.

This would be a nice saddle for a youth or small adult who’s interested in the show ring.
