The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”
Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.
The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.
Last week’s Pick, a solid youth barrel/trail saddle from Dakota - has generated 13 bids so far, with the current bid at $355 with a day or so left. This would be a great Christmas gift for some lucky girl or boy.
This week we’ve found a sturdy Circle Y saddle from the days when Circle Y built some of the best production saddles available. This one has a few blemishes but they’re just on the surface. The foundation is still solid.
This is a Circle Y Roping saddle with a bull-hide covered wood tree with QH bars and weighs in at 36lbs. It has a 16 inch suede seat, floral/basket weave tooling, and supple leather.
This is a great saddle for someone who likes the sturdiness and strong foundation of the older saddles. Obviously there are quite a few folks out there that fit that bill as there are already 13 bids on this saddle. I think they’re on to something.

This week we’ve found a great bargain on a solid and substantial roping saddle from Billy Cook. This is a genuine Billy Cook made by Billy Cook of Sulphur, Oklahoma, as opposed to the lesser quality saddles being made by Simco/Longhorn in Greenville, TX under the Billy Cook name.
This is a sizable saddle, weighing in at 35lbs with full Quarter Horse bars and a 7 inch gullet. The seat is 15 1/2 and suede, which is sizable for a roping saddle where folks tend to want a snug fit. It has basket weave tooling on the fork and skirts.
The saddle is definitely is well used and has quite a bit of wear, but with a well-built saddle like this there are many miles left. So, you have a chance to get a solid saddle for dirt cheap. There is no reserve on the saddle and the starting bid is $0.99!

Martin Saddlery makes a real nice saddle. They’ve gotten a bit fancy of late with slick marketing, but they still make a fine saddle and are a favorite in the competitive arena. Picking up a used Martin is a good buy.
This week’s pick is one of those good buys. It’s a 14.5″ roping saddle that has very few miles on it. So few, it looks almost new.
The seller lists all the decorative features (floral and basket tooling, padded seat, roughout jockey and fenders), but hasn’t indicated the gullet width or bar type, so you’ll want to check with them on that before you bid.
There’s some action on this saddle with 4 bids and and a current bid of $405, but there’s still an opportunity to pick up a good buy!

Double J is a very nice quality production saddle brand out of Yoakum, Texas. Their saddles start at around $1500 new. Shopping for a used one can be a great way to get a quality saddle at a very affordable price.
This week’s Pick is a well-used, but well cared for Double J roping saddle. It has a 15″ suede seat, 7 inch gullet, oak and acorn tooling, and 3″ roper stirrups. The saddle has two of Double J’s Hi Tech features – adjustable fenders and a suede skirt liner. Click through on the link below to see photos of the these features.
This is a chance to have a really well made saddle at a fraction of it’s cost new. As of this writing, the current bid is only $152.50!

This week we have a saddle from another great brand – Martin Saddlery. Martin is very popular among the professional and competitive crowd, but they make a great saddle for any rider. The saddle this week is a 16 inch roping saddle with plenty of flash – oak and acorn tooling over the entire saddle with a suede seat and silver-laced cantle binding. The gullet measures 6 3/4" and it’s double rigged.
There’s a lot of bidding action on this saddle – 14 bids with six days still left on the auction but the price is still at only $610 as of this writing. If you’re looking for a quality roping saddle at an affordable price, you’ll want to check this one out.
