The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”
Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.
Checking out our Picks each week will give you some great insight into buying used saddles. Make sure to click through to the actual listing to see all of the photos and description from the seller.
The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.
LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – an almost new 15″ Saddle King Ranch/Roping Saddle – ended up being a real solid buy for some lucky rider. There were 10 bids, but the winning bid price was only $510, a good deal indeed.
This week we’ve gone back to one of our favorite production saddle brands – Crates. Crates has been making quality saddles in Tennessee for generations.
This week’s pick, a 17″ Crates Trail Saddle, is another one of those great “almost new” used saddles. This one could pass for new.
It’s a medium oil with a suede 17inch seat, and basket weave tooling. The saddle has Semi QH bars and in-skirt rigging that helps make this a lightweight saddle at only 27lbs.
This saddle, with a 17inch seat and Semi QH bars, will require a horse with a longer back (so that the saddle won’t rest on the horse’s loins) and not too broad of shoulders.
If your horse fits this description and you’re looking for a lightweight, comfortable trail saddle, this Crates saddle would be a nice choice.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
As I suspected, last week’s pick – a 16″ Circle Y Roping Saddle – didn’t go by unnoticed. With eleven bids, the final selling price was $760. A good, solid saddle, but I think there are better buys out there.
This week we’ve chosen a brand we haven’t featured before – Saddle King. Saddle King produces saddles from the lower end to the middle range, in terms of price and quality.
This week’s pick, a 15″ Saddle King Ranch/Roping Saddle. is from the higher end of their range. The seller describes it as “barely used” and the photos look to support that claim. As a backup saddle, it didn’t see much use.
It’s a handsome “old timey” saddle with a high back cantle and barbwire border tooling in a rich, rustic color. It’s built on a rawhide covered tree with Semi QH bars. The saddle comes with a matching, barbwire tooled breast collar.
This would be a very nice all around saddle that would take you from trail riding to ranch work. It’s only receiveda little notice so far with only 2 bids and a current high bid of $400, as of this writing.
If you’re looking for a solid, almost-new saddle for a used-saddle price, you’ll want to take a look a this one.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – a 14.5″ Hereford Trail Saddle – was picked up for a bargain price of $251. There was plenty of action with 16 bids, but the bidders were pretty timid so the winner got themselves a great little saddle for a song.
This week we’ve gone back to a classic brand – Circle Y. While the newer Circle Y’s don’t measure up to the older ones, it remains a solid brand.
This week’s pick is a 16″ Circle Y Roping Saddle that would be a solid choice for an all around riding saddle. This saddle has obviously been well cared for and has lots of rides left in it.
The saddle has a 16″ suede seat, and tooling on the fork, skirts, rear jockeys and fenders. I wish the seller had provided more info, including gullet width, so make sure you inquire before bidding.
As of this writing, there are already two bidders with a high bid of $570. This saddle isn’t going unnoticed and won’t be bought for a song, but it’s a good saddle that could easily become someone’s favorite saddle.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s Pick, a very solid 16″ Genuine Billy Cook Trail/Pleasure Saddle, generated a lot of action. The final tally was 27 bids and a selling price of $792. A fair deal for both buyer and seller.
This week we’ve found a handsome Martin Saddlery Roping Saddle in a size 17 seat. Martin Saddlery is a fine maker who specializes in the competition type saddles.
These larger seats are harder to find so if you need one, you’ll definitely want to check out this quality saddle.
Just a reminder that a size 17 saddle requires a horse with a longer back and a sturdy conformation. On a shorter backed horse, the saddle would lie on the horse’s loins and cause pressure and pain.
This handsome saddle has a padded seat, floral and geometric tooling on the back jockeys, skirts, fork, and cantle. It comes with a 32″ mohair cinch and a matching breast collar.
The seller doesn’t indicate the gullet width or bar type of the saddle tree so make sure to ask before bidding. On a saddle of this size, you’ll usually find wider gullets as you need stockier horses to carry the rider’s weight. But don’t assume. Ask!
This is a well cared for and relatively new saddle by a quality maker. As there are already 18 bids and a bid price of $999.99 as of this writing, it won’t be a steal, but it’s a quality hard-to-find saddle that will last a lifetime.

Last week’s Pick, a really nice 16″ Leddy Ranch/Cutting Saddle, generated a lot of action with 14 bids and a selling price of $1,197.95.
This week we’ve discovered a saddle for sale from a maker you probably haven’t heard of – Wilford Lewis. Lewis is out of Hereford, Texas and comes from a long line of saddle makers. Wilford died in 2007 but his sons are carrying on the tradition of quality saddle making.
This is a beautifully designed and balanced roping saddle. It has a rawhide-covered wood tree, 16 inch suede seat, and 7 inch gullet. The floral tooling over the majority of the saddle is gorgeous and the added touch of coin conchos gives it even more flair.
The seller has included a good variety of photos so that you can really examine the saddle.
This is a well crafted and very handsome saddle. As of this writing, there are only two bids and a current high bid of $229.16. This one is definitely worth taking a look at.
