LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – an almost new 15″ Saddle King Ranch/Roping Saddle – ended up being a real solid buy for some lucky rider. There were 10 bids, but the winning bid price was only $510, a good deal indeed.
This week we’ve gone back to one of our favorite production saddle brands – Crates. Crates has been making quality saddles in Tennessee for generations.
This week’s pick, a 17″ Crates Trail Saddle, is another one of those great “almost new” used saddles. This one could pass for new.
It’s a medium oil with a suede 17inch seat, and basket weave tooling. The saddle has Semi QH bars and in-skirt rigging that helps make this a lightweight saddle at only 27lbs.
This saddle, with a 17inch seat and Semi QH bars, will require a horse with a longer back (so that the saddle won’t rest on the horse’s loins) and not too broad of shoulders.
If your horse fits this description and you’re looking for a lightweight, comfortable trail saddle, this Crates saddle would be a nice choice.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – a nifty little 13″ Teskey Barrel Saddle – sadly didn’t receive a single bid. The seller put a bit steep starting bid price of $750 that probably scared folks away, but the saddle is worth that price and a bit more. Hopefully the seller will re-list it.
This week’s pick is a handsome vintage Crates Trail Saddle. You don’t see many Crates saddle of this period for sale, so this is a special little gem. I’m a big fan of Crates saddles. They’re well built, balanced, and attractive saddles.
This saddle has the look of Simco saddles of this period with dark oil and full floral tooling. The seller hasn’t listed a gullet width, so you’ll want to inquire before bidding. Saddles of this period are usually semi QH bars.
There is only one bid as of this writing of $314. This would be a nice addition to the barn as it is one of those saddles that most folks will find comfortable.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s Pick, a 16″ Wilford Lewis Roping Saddle, generated the kind of action you’d expect for this special saddle. There were 23 bids and a final sale price of $1475. Mr. Lewis made fine saddles.
THIS WEEK’S PICK:
This week we’ve found a very nice production saddle for sale that might fit into more budgets. I’m a big fan of Crates saddles.
I think they’re one of the best production saddle manufacturers producing saddles today. Their saddles are well crafted, balanced, and a nice ride. I know firsthand as I own one myself. It’s a saddle I use for guests riders and folks always compliment me on it.
This Crates is a handsome All-Event saddle – a good choice for a general purpose saddle – team penning, barrel racing, roping, trail riding. The saddle has a rawhide-covered wood tree with full QH bars, double rigging, a 15″ suede seat, and geometric border tooling.
The owner has taken great care of it and it’s ready for a lifetime of use.

Last week’s Pick, a very nice 16″ Genuine Billy Cook Wade Ranch Saddle – sadly went unsold. The $1300 starting bid might have been a bit high, but I understand the seller not wanting to part with this saddle for less.
This week we’ve found a more affordable, but still quality saddle – a Crates trail saddle. I KNOW this is a great saddle because I own one of them. It has the great Crates craftsmanship, it’s pretty light (26lbs), and it’s a great ride.
This saddle is in “almost new” shape, with very few rides on it. It has a 16″ dark brown suede seat, and basket weave tooling on the skirts, cantle, fork, front jockeys, and part of the fender. The seller describes it as having Semi QH bars with a 7″ gullet. That’s too wide for Sem-QH so you’ll want to contact the seller to get clarification.
The starting bid on this saddle is $400, with no bids as of this writing. Since this saddle retails for around $1000 new, this is a bargain waiting for a buyer.

This week we’ve found an almost-new Crates reining saddle that is a real dandy. I’m a big fan of Crates saddles. I own one myself and I think they’re one of the best production saddle brands out there. They make nice, solid saddles.
This week’s saddle has a 16inch suede seat, 6 5/8 gullet (full QH bars), with basket weave tooling on parts of the the fenders, skirts, jockeys, fork and cantle.
Reiners are close contact saddles that have become popular for use as overall training saddles and for trail riding. They’re not suitable, however, as a heavy duty “using” saddle.
In the photo you can see how nicely balanced this saddle is – a level seat with the stirrups hanging straight down. This saddle has so few rides in it that it’s basically a new saddle.
