The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”

Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.

Checking out our Picks each week will give you some great insight into buying used saddles. Make sure to click through to the actual listing to see all of the photos and description from the seller.

The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

It seems to me that saddle sellers and buyers are out of synch of late. I see lots of sellers listing saddles at the upper end of their value and buyers don’t seem to be biting. I think the sellers have to start realizing that it’s a buyers’ market right now and, if they truly want to sell their saddles, they need to get real and start their bidding at lower prices.

Last week’s pick – a nice little 13″ Youth Trail Saddle – hasn’t sold yet and is still listed on eBay. The “Buy It Now Price” is $299, but you can make a lower offer and. if you’re interested in the saddle, I’d recommend you do.

Used Circle Y Park and Trail SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week, we’ve chosen a popular Circle Y model. The saddle is a 17″ Circle Y Park and Trail Saddle. Circle Y has sold a lot of these models and they’ve been very popular, relatively light, general trail saddles.

The Park & Trails have Circle Y’s flex-lite tree, gel-insert seats, and taller, 5 inch cantles, making for a comfortable ride. This saddle is a handsome dark brown with acorn tooling

The seller claims the saddle has only been used 12 times and it certainly looks pretty darn new in the photos. A good opportunity to get a popular like-new saddle for a used saddle price. These saddles sell new for around $1500, so the starting bid price of $750 would be a good deal. There are no bids as of this writing.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s pick – a 14.5″ Hereford Trail Saddle – was picked up for a bargain price of $251. There was plenty of action with 16 bids, but the bidders were pretty timid so the winner got themselves a great little saddle for a song.

Used Circle Y Roping SaddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week we’ve gone back to a classic brand – Circle Y. While the newer Circle Y’s don’t measure up to the older ones, it remains a solid brand.

This week’s pick is a 16″ Circle Y Roping Saddle that would be a solid choice for an all around riding saddle. This saddle has obviously been well cared for and has lots of rides left in it.

The saddle has a 16″ suede seat, and tooling on the fork, skirts, rear jockeys and fenders. I wish the seller had provided more info, including gullet width, so make sure you inquire before bidding.

As of this writing, there are already two bidders with a high bid of $570. This saddle isn’t going unnoticed and won’t be bought for a song, but it’s a good saddle that could easily become someone’s favorite saddle.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s Pick, a very well built 17″ Martin Saddlery Roping Saddle, was another high-action sale. The final tally was 25 bids and a selling price of $1325. The Martin Saddlery brand is known for quality.

circle y show saddleTHIS WEEK’S PICK:

The show season is around the corner, so this week we’ve found a very solid 16″ Circle Y Show  Saddle. .

This saddle is medium oil with a padded 16 inch seat, floral carving, and nicely turned stirrups. It has a tasteful complement of silver trim on the corners of the skirts, back jockeys, stirrups, and the fork. Some show saddles get a bit carried away with the silver trim, so it’s nice to see a tasteful presentation. The gullet width is approximately 6 1/2 inches.

This is a well-cared for saddle that will get you or your kids in the show ring without breaking the bank. The starting bid of $500 may be scaring folks away as there are no bids as of this writing. This saddle is certainly worth $500 so don’t be scared off.

Used Circle Y All Around Saddle

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s Pick, a very well cared for 15″ Crates All-Event Saddle, went for $700 to a buyer who used ebay’s “Buy it Now” feature to make sure they got the saddle. A good buy for a saddle that will provide years and years of good riding for both horse and rider.

THIS WEEK’S PICK:

This week we’ve found one of those great older Circle Y saddles that had so much style. Circle Y used to be considered the best production saddle brand around. But since their purchase by Tucker, the quality of their design and craftsmanship, sadly just isn’t what it used to be

This saddle is a 30 year old, 15 inch, general purpose Circle Y saddle. The seller is calling it a “ladies” saddle, but I doubt Circle Y marketed it as such. It’s a smaller and lighter saddle at 29lbs, which is probably why they’re labeling it a “ladies” saddle.

The saddle is built on a rawhide-covered, wood tree and has a 6.5″ gullet and 7/8 in-skirt rigging. It really is a very attractive saddle with full floral tooling, buck stitching, and a suede seat. It’s been well cared for and is ready to ride. This is a nice, classic, well-built saddle that would be a great trail and general use saddle.

Circle Y Roping Saddle

Last week’s Pick, a solid youth barrel/trail saddle from Dakota - has generated 13 bids so far, with the current bid at $355 with a day or so left. This would be a great Christmas gift for some lucky girl or boy.

This week we’ve found a sturdy Circle Y saddle from the days when Circle Y built some of the best production saddles available. This one has a few blemishes but they’re just on the surface. The foundation is still solid.

This is a Circle Y Roping saddle with a bull-hide covered wood tree with QH bars and weighs in at 36lbs. It has a 16 inch suede seat, floral/basket weave tooling, and supple leather.

This is a great saddle for someone who likes the sturdiness and strong foundation of the older saddles. Obviously there are quite a few folks out there that fit that bill as there are already 13 bids on this saddle. I think they’re on to something.
