The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”
Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.
Checking out our Picks each week will give you some great insight into buying used saddles. Make sure to click through to the actual listing to see all of the photos and description from the seller.
The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.
LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick, a very good saddle, was left unsold. The 16″ Dakota Trail Saddle is solidly built and would make someone a good ride for a lifetime.
THIS WEEK’S PICK:
This week we go back to a classic brand – Billy Cook; or more specifically, Genuine Billy Cook. The “Genuine” label is used to distinguish the saddles being produced in Sulphur, Oklahoma (the “Genuine” article) from the Billy Cooks being made by Longhorn in Greenville, Texas. A while back Billy Cook needed to raise some cash and sold the Billy Cook name to Longhorn, but is somehow still able to make saddles under the Billy Cook brand. So Longhorn Billy Cooks carry a “Greenville, Texas” mark and the Genuine Billy Cooks carry a Sulphur, Oklahoma mark.
Now, which ones are worth your while? Definitely the Genuine version. Better quality materials. Better craftsmanship. Always look for the “Sulphur, OK” mark.
This week’s saddle is a 16″ Genuine Billy Cook Wade Saddle. Billy Cook describes these saddles as a “Hard Seat,” but don’t let that scare you away. It’s just a way to distinguish it from a padded seat. You won’t find a padded seat on a “real” Wade saddle. Uh uh. Just not done. If you’re a regular reader, you know that the Wade tree saddle is our favorite riding saddle.
The seller has this listed as a used saddle but I’ll be darned if I could tell the difference from a new one. This saddle brand new lists at about $1500. So the Buy it Now price of $799 for a saddle that looks like it hasn’t even been on a horse is a good buy. But the seller also has a “Make an Offer” option, so if you’re interested, you may try to get him to bite for less.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s Pick, a very nice 15.5″ M.L. Leddy Cutting Saddle, looked like someone might steal it early on with only one bid for $100. But cream rises and this saddle ended up selling for $1875.
This week we’ve found a really nice Genuine Billy Cook (Sulphur, OK brand) that would be a wonderful saddle for all around general riding.
The seller calls it an “Original Billy Cook,” but the correct term is “Genuine” as you’ll see on the photo of the maker’s mark on the listing.
This is a 16″ Billy Cook Trail/Pleasure saddle. The saddle is a very handsome dark cherry color with geometric tooling on the jockeys, skirts, fork and cantle. The seller does not mention the gullet width or bar type, so you’ll want to inquire before bidding.
The saddle has obviously been very well cared for, is in great shape and not very old. An Original Billy Cook brand from the Suphur, OK operation will be a very nice quality saddle that will give you many miles.
Better jump on this one, as there are already nine bids as of this writing.

Last week’s Pick, a very nice 14″ Courts Sharon Camarillo All-Around Saddle – was another saddle with a lot of action. With 15 bids, it ended up selling for $566. I think both buyer and seller made out well on this sale.
This week we’ve found a really handsome and classic Wade ranch saddle from Billy Cook – Genuine Billy Cook of Sulphur, Oklahoma.
This saddle is in great shape (only two years old) and has obviously been very well cared for. The seller states that it’s never had a dally taken on it. It it is a solid and heavy duty saddle with a 16″ inch seat and 7inch gullet. It’s a smooth out saddle with tooling on the skirt, fork, cantle and back jockey.
I’m extremely partial to Wade saddles. If you’re going to be spending quite a bit of time in your saddle, nothing beats the comfort of a wade. And this is one handsome Wade.

This week we’ve found a great bargain on a solid and substantial roping saddle from Billy Cook. This is a genuine Billy Cook made by Billy Cook of Sulphur, Oklahoma, as opposed to the lesser quality saddles being made by Simco/Longhorn in Greenville, TX under the Billy Cook name.
This is a sizable saddle, weighing in at 35lbs with full Quarter Horse bars and a 7 inch gullet. The seat is 15 1/2 and suede, which is sizable for a roping saddle where folks tend to want a snug fit. It has basket weave tooling on the fork and skirts.
The saddle is definitely is well used and has quite a bit of wear, but with a well-built saddle like this there are many miles left. So, you have a chance to get a solid saddle for dirt cheap. There is no reserve on the saddle and the starting bid is $0.99!
