The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”
Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.
Checking out our Picks each week will give you some great insight into buying used saddles. Make sure to click through to the actual listing to see all of the photos and description from the seller.
The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.
LAST WEEK’S PICK:
I knew last week’s pick – a really nice 12″ Billy Cook Youth Barrel Trail Saddle – would generate a lot of action … and rightfully so. It started out with a number of low bids but ended up going for $306 after 26 bids. Still a good price for a hard-to-find saddle.
THIS WEEK’S PICK:
This week we’ve gone back a ways for a vintage Big Horn saddle. I love the old Big Horns – they’re right up there with the old Simcos and Herefords.
This week’s pick is a 15″ Big Horn Trail Saddle with that great vintage style - darker oil, overall floral tooling, low cantle, square skirts. A true classic.
The seller says the saddle has full QH bars which will fit most stocky quarter horse types. This would be a nice saddle for trail riding as a main or extra saddle.
The seller has the price listed at $400 but is accepting offers. If you’re interested, I’d make a lesser offer and see if you can’t sneak this one out for a deal.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:
Last week’s pick – a great old classic 15″ Vintage Simco Trail Saddle – caught quite a few bidders’ interest. There were 21 bids, but the final sale price that was still only $177.50. As we described it, this saddle was truly a “recession” pick. A great little saddle for a great little price.
This week we found another great little recession candidate – a vintage Big Horn saddle. The older Big Horns are nice, solid saddles.
This week’s pick, is a 15″ Big Horn All Around Saddle that is really an attractive little saddle. In dark oil, with a suede seat, fully floral tooled and a touch of silver trim on the skirt corners, this classic saddle has that great vintage style.
The saddles appears to be in great shape for it’s age and well cared for. The seller states that the gullet width is 6 3/4″.
As of this writing, there have been 6 bids and a top bid price of $88.79. This would be a great saddle for a youth or small adult or just as an extra saddle for your barn. It certainly won’t break the bank.

Big Horn Lives On?

A month or so ago I announced that Big Horn had shut their doors. Now it appears that they might yet live. Word is that American Saddlery will be purchasing Big Horn or certain of their assets. It’s not clear yet what that purchase will mean for the Big Horn brand, but it appears that saddles will continue to be produced under the Big Horn name.
Big Horn Goes Out of Business

Chattanooga saddle maker Big Horn Inc. has closed its doors after decades of manufacturing saddles, horse riding equipment and personal leather goods.
A company spokeswoman issued a statement to the Chattanooga Times Free Press Oct. 28. She indicated that recent slowdowns in the economy had hurt the business. Many saddle manufacturers rely on credit to front the cash required to produce a line of saddles. The current credit crisis makes that financing tough to come by.
