The “Used Saddle Pick of the Week”

Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.

Checking out our Picks each week will give you some great insight into buying used saddles. Make sure to click through to the actual listing to see all of the photos and description from the seller.

The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.

LAST WEEK’S PICK:

Last week’s Pick, a solid  14″ Genuine Billy Cook Barrel Saddle, generated 24 bids and sold for $455 – a fair price.

This week I’ve found a great saddle from my absolute favorite production brand – McCall. McCall saddles are about as close as you can get to custom without buying custom. It’s almost a shame to call them a production saddle.

These are very high quality saddles with prices for new models starting at around $2500. McCall saddles are expertly crafted from quality materials. These are saddles that will last beyond your lifetime.

This week’s pick is a quality 17″ McCall Wade Tree Saddle . With a hard-to-find 17″ seat, this is a particularly great find.

The saddle is built on a rawhide-covered wood wade tree. Unfortunately the seller does not mention the gullet width (a pet peeve of mine), so make sure to ask. Wade trees are usually described in terms of degree of the bar angle (90,93,96), with the larger the bar angle the more stout and wide shouldered the horse it will fit. The saddle has rough out fenders, seat and jockeys as is common on Wade saddles. This is a working saddle that can be roped off of and taken for long, long rides. The saddle has little wear and is in great condition.

If you’ve never ridden in a Wade, you’re in for a treat. I find them to be the most comfortable style out there. The seat is deep and sits low on the horse providing close contact with your horse. The stirrups hang straight down (rather than forward as with so many low quality saddles), placing your legs in the perfect position. The saddles make you feel secure and comfy.

The seller has no reserve on this saddle so it will sell. The starting bid is $1000 and there are no bids as of this writing. This is a whole lot of saddle for a great price. If you or someone you knows needs a size 17 seat, this is a saddle they should be considering.
