How To Carry a Western Saddle

Western saddles can be quite heavy and a challenge to manage for the shorter and less strong among us.
But, before you give up and turn to one of the really light weight saddles that won’t last as long and won’t be nearly as comfortable as a traditional western saddle, let me give you a tip on a technique for carrying your saddle. With this technique you use leverage more than brute strength.
With the saddle on a stand or fence, hold the horn in your left hand.and place your right hand on the off side of the cantle. Lift up the saddle and tilt the near side up so that the seat is perpendicular to the ground. Bring the saddle to your hip. The fleece side and the near side fender and stirrup will be against your body.
You’re now using your hip and your right arm to hold the saddle, as shown in the photo. If needed, you can place your left hand on the horn or near side of the fork. There are several techniques for carrying saddles and there’s no “right” way, but I can tell you as someone who’s only 5′3″ I have found this technique to be the most effective. I can carry a 45lb saddle using this technique.
