The Packer’s Bible

If you’re considering packing with your horses this summer (or even if you’re just interested in the subject), you’ll want to pick of this little jewel of a book, first published in the 1950’s – Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails.

Author Joe Black’s book is known as the “packer’s bible” and hasn’t been improved upon in the many year since its publications.

The book has great illustrations, descriptions, and explanations of everything you need to know to be a packer. And packing isn’t something you should try without knowing all the ropes. It isn’t safe for you or your horses. Your best bet is to bring this small guide with you on your trips for handy reference.

As an added bonus, Horses, Hitches and Rocky Trails is a very entertaining read. Joe was a cowboy through and through (he died in 1986) and his writing style reveals that. It’s entertaining and definitely “western.”
