A Horse Can Always Find Trouble…

If you have horses, you’ve probably heard the saying that "You could put a horse in a padded stall and they’d still find a way to injure themselves."  And, chances are you’ve probably had enough experiences yourself to understand what they’re talking about.

I’ve had my gelding, Skip, for about six years and he’s always kept out of trouble. He’s 16 now and he’s a pretty sensible guy and probably just a bit too lazy to go looking for trouble. Well, that’s what I thought until this weekend when he met me at the gate with a sad look on his face and a nice sized gash on his foreleg.

Now, to appreciate how puzzling this was to me you have to understand the life Skip leads. He’s turned out 24/7 in a 50 acre pasture with five other geldings and a covered shed with a big long wind-break wall. Skip’s living the good Big Sky life in southwestern Montana.

So, how the heck did he find somthing to cut his leg on in a 50 acre pasture? Well, there is an irrigation wheel line that we thought we had fenced off completely. Guess we didn’t fence it off enough. (There’s no such thing as enough with horses, is there?)

Because Skip’s never been in trouble before, I’m thinking one of his herdmates led him astray. I’m hoping the trip to the vet to get stitched up convinced him that it wasn’t such a good idea. Luckily he didn’t do too much damage. Two to three weeks and he’ll be good as new.

Anyone else out there have a good "how the heck did he do that?" story about their horse?

  1. Not only horses can find trouble anywhere and everywhere, but their four legged counterpart, namely the donkey, can as well…if not more so.
One day as I was preparing dinner, I happened to glance out the porch door towards our small pasture. Thinking I would see the horses lazily grazing in the newly yet sparse pasture, I was surprised to see our donkey Coco standing there, gazing towards the house. What was strange about that you ask? Well….he had a huge green plastic rain barrel around his head!
Seems he had found the bottomless barrel standing against the barn wall and just had to stick his head into it. Not realizing that the top was somewhat too narrow for him to pull his head out with such big ears, he lifted up his head with the barrel securely in place. Obviously he couldn’t get that big green thing off himself, so he stood quietly until someone, anyone, from the house would take notice!!! What a character! I even have pictures of him with the barrel on in case nobody believed me!
