Used Saddle Pick of the Week: Mint Condition Tex Tan Hereford Saddle
The "Used Saddle Pick of the Week"
Every week we scour the Internet searching for a particularly juicy bargain on a high quality used western saddle and feature it here on the WSG Saddle Blog. The saddles featured are listed for sale on ebay as of the date of the post.
The Western Saddle Guide is not the seller of the saddles featured and does not make any representations about them. We encourage all potential buyers to do their own due diligence on the seller and the saddle before purchasing.
Oh, this week, we've really found a fabulous saddle bargain for you. Tex Tan's Hereford Saddles have been a high quality saddle brand for years. The older models can command as high a price used as some of today's brand new quality saddles. A Hereford saddle is all business - it's about the business of riding. If you want a great using saddle, a Hereford is a great choice.
This week we've found a 15 inch seat Hereford of some years that's barely been used for sale on ebay. And, the most amazing thing is that there is no reserve on this saddle - meaning the saddle will sell to the highest bidder regardless of the price. No pulling it off if the seller doesn't get the amount they were looking for.
So, as of today, with five or so days left on the auction, the highest bid is $280!! But there has already been eleven bids, so there are some savvy buyers watching this saddle. The seller has done a very nice job of presenting the saddle with numerous photos (including ones of the Hereford mark) to show the great condition. This is definitely a saddle worth considering.

Sir/Madame:
Beautiful saddle pictured. Question: I have a western saddle simular to the one pictured which has been in the family for some time. Its a "Hereford Brand Tex Tan of Yoacum" and directly behind the saddle seat is a leather piece with 2 sets of numbers. Is there a definition for these numbers? What source is used to determine such a saddle's value? I'm just curious. Can you help?
Best regards,
Rod
Rod,
Those number's would be serial numbers identifying the model and often including a date manufactured code. Tex Tan is the only one that can decipher them for you. You might try contacting them through their website: http://www.textan.com/
As to value, the only source is the market place. Look on the used saddle sites and see what similar saddles are selling for - ebay and tacktrader.com are two good sites to check.
Hello, I was reading around trying to find info about my saddle I have a Texas Tanning and manufacturing Co. saddle it has a tiny oval plate on the back that says Texas Tanning and Manufacturing Co. Herford.any info you can give as to the age and value of this saddle would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully Bill
Bill,
Texas Tanning is the original name for Tex Tan. Tex Tan was the first saddlery established in Yoakum, Texas - the western saddle capital of the world. Hereford is a Tex Tan brand - a very high quality Tex Tan brand.
I can't give you any info on the age and value of your saddle. I'd suggest you contact Tex Tan. Their website is http://www.textan.com.
You won't believe this but I just purchased a Hereford saddle very similar (except mine doesn't have any strings on it, just conchos, and the latigo keeper is missing…the tooling may be a different design as well) for $165 Canadian. Same scallop on the skirt, looks like same seat color. It's a stunning saddle and in very nice shape, just needs a good cleaning, I can't wait to get out and ride in it! Thanks for the tip about contacting Tex Tan for more information with the serial number. Much appreciated. Great site!
